Glenlea Astronomical Observatory (GAO)
The Winnipeg Centre operates an observatory at the University of Manitoba’s Glenlea Research Station, 15 km south of Winnipeg. Our main instrument is a 12" Meade LX200, in an Ash dome with a fully equipped warm room and a composting toilet. We have concrete pad for setting up telescopes and tables for charts and accessories to be laid out on. The warm room also houses an IBM-compatible computer used for CCD imaging, photometry, and star chart generation. All members are eligible to use these facilities all year round. The dome can be used by members in good standing (have been members for at least one year) once they have completed a short training program. Contact the observatory director for details or to book the dome.
Members Observing Night (MON)
Members Observing Nights are held on the second Saturday of Each Month, following Member Meetings. They serve as a regular opportunity for members to get together under the stars. MON are hosted by some of our more experienced members and serve as an ideal opportunity to learn about observing. All members, once oriented to the GAO are entitled to aquire a key to the warm room that can be aquired by contacting Lindsay Price and paying a 10.00 deposit, which can be remitted when the key is turned in. For more information, contact the observatory director. Members are also encouraged to familiarize themselves with the proceedure for use of the GAO facilities and equipment by downloading and reviewing the following documents.
